Albert Porter and the gang over at AudiogoN really did up this year. They have included sound links from the rooms as well.

. . . Roger Sanders was showing his model 10C (digital crossover) electrostatic hybrid speaker along with his own amplifiers, preamplifier, and wires. He uses the same source at the show that he does at home. I know since I was there in September. While you may not be an electrostatic fan, he gets a very balanced sound that is amazing. I believe that he knows the equipment, he manufacturers most of it himself, and he knows what it should sound like. He can quickly set up the system and find the best location and representation of his vision of good sound. The typical drawbacks of electrostatic speakers have been addressed with Roger’s designs. They can play loud, they have bass, and they image very well. Congratulations Roger, nice job and great sound. . .

Sanders had their Model 10B hybrid electrostat, with a 10-inch dynamic woofer. ($12,995/pair) These were driven by a Sanders power amp, a solid state unit which is optimized for driving electrostats. I heard this system last year, and liked it very much, so I didn’t spend much time in this room. The speakers are very transparent with lots of detail, but they have a narrow sweet spot. Roger Sanders sets up his room with a single row of chairs, one behind another, aligned on the axis between the speakers, so that no one is listening off axis. This year Sanders introduced a smaller model, the Model 11, with a retail price of $9,995/pair.

What if you gave a party--and FOUR THOUSAND of your closest friends came?

That's what RMAF 2009 was like. The mood was upbeat, the sound was great, and over 150 rooms held an unimaginable variety of wonderful toys. Unlike the air of anxiety often felt at CES, both staff and attendees seemed excited and glad to be there. And why not? What better way to spit in the eye of doomsayers? This place ROCKED, and there was no shortage of new-tech products to introduce the high end to the next generation.

Following the death of organizer Al Stiefel earlier this year, there was some uncertainty regarding the future of the show. Thanks to Al's wife Marjorie Baumert the show went on, bigger than ever, and will continue in years to come. Here's proof that an act of love beats corporate money-grubbing, every time. Many thanks to Marjorie and her staff for a great show, and a fitting memorial to a good man.

I’m a sucker for panels.  If a room had a big panel, I was in.  Perhaps the best overall sound I’ve heard from a hybrid ESL could be found at Sanders Sound Systems.   Roger was showing his 10B ($12,995), a hybrid that incorporates a 10” woofer in a transmission line, which comes with active crossover and 600wpc bass amp.  For the ESL part of the speaker, he was using his ESL Amp (designed specifically to drive stats).  It’s an improved version of the amp formerly produced by Innersound, a design that garnered very good reviews.  The ESL amp ($3,995) puts out 400wpc into 8ohms, 760 into 4ohms, and as a mono mode, 1,000 watts into 8 and 1,800 into 4.

The sound was very faithful to what was on the recordings.  Listening to Willie Nelson and Stevie Ray Vaughn (how did he know I was from Texas?), the vocals were extremely compact and smack dab in the middle of the sound stage.  It was some of the truest sounding vocals I heard.  Most panel and line source systems will make the singer sound abnormally large and too diffuse, like they had a mouth 10 feet wide.  It might sound cool, but it’s not right.  The 10B’s performance was exemplary in this regard.  Even at relatively high outputs, the voice stayed solid and compact.  Meanwhile, the acoustic space stretched beyond the outside boundaries of the speakers, doing an excellent job of recreating the acoustic space.

Roger surprised me with a recording he made of Saint-Saens Organ Symphony (How did he know I had French relatives on my father’s side?), which did a good job of showcasing what the TL woofer can do.  I could definitely feel the fundamental bass frequency.  The acoustic space was realistic and frequency balance was first rate.  Though I was there for a short time, I don’t think there are any integration issues with the woofer and ESL element.

The system had a wide useable sweet spot, with good impact and speed, could play big, and managed to minimize the sound of the room.  The electronics were tube-like with the impact and noise level of transistors.  Roger will be sending the 10B to be reviewed by DAGOGO.  Based on what we heard, we are looking forward to that!

Sandersand-JD.gif This is Roger Sanders (left) with our publisher, James Darby. Roger has spent most of his life researching and building electrostatic speakers, the latest incarnation the 10B's you see in the background. James is putting the finishing touches on our world's first review of the Sanders 'stats and the electronic remotely adjustable crossover and amplifiers that Roger also makes that are designed to deal with driving the rigorous loads that such speakers demand.

Apparently Sanders has done a pretty good job because he and his speakers have been given Stereomojo's rare "Product of the Year Award" for 2008. Congrats to Roger Sanders and his 10B's!

Roger Sanders, the electrostatic speaker designer who was the subject of a Rendezvous article in our pages a little over a year ago, was back with his new model 10b electrostat/dynamic hybrids. They were driven by Sanders' own electronics. Only the source, a Tascam flash memory recorder, was not his own. Panel speakers are not noted for great depth, of course, whatever their technology, but the 10b's put up a superb, stable image, and the music was fast and detailed, as well as natural.
