Sanders' Electrostatics
By John Atkinson • Posted: Apr 17, 2011
Back in the day, you couldn't cruise the corridors at an audio Show without hearing Willie Nelson's arrangement of "Stardust" coming from every open door. So it was with a feeling of nostalgia that I walked into the Sanders room at Axpona and heard that familiar voice. Providing the tunes was an all-Sanders system featuring the Model 10c speakers ($13,000/pair including 500Wpc bass amplifier and crossover module), which combines an electrostatic panels for the midrange and highs with a transmission line-loaded 10" moving-coil woofer. Unusually, the active crossover operates in the digital domain, operating at 24/96 and splitting the signal at 172Hz with 48dB/octave slopes, which should ameliorate the problem blending the omnidirectional woofer with the dipolar panel. With a Sanders line stage, Sanders electrostatic amplifier ($4000), and Sanders cables—Roger Sanders feels strongly that a system should designed as a system—the 10cs sounded unexpectedly dynamic.

Albert Porter and the gang over at AudiogoN really did up this year. They have included sound links from the rooms as well.

. . . Roger Sanders was showing his model 10C (digital crossover) electrostatic hybrid speaker along with his own amplifiers, preamplifier, and wires. He uses the same source at the show that he does at home. I know since I was there in September. While you may not be an electrostatic fan, he gets a very balanced sound that is amazing. I believe that he knows the equipment, he manufacturers most of it himself, and he knows what it should sound like. He can quickly set up the system and find the best location and representation of his vision of good sound. The typical drawbacks of electrostatic speakers have been addressed with Roger’s designs. They can play loud, they have bass, and they image very well. Congratulations Roger, nice job and great sound. . .

Sanders
had their Model 10B hybrid electrostat, with a 10-inch dynamic woofer.
($12,995/pair) These were driven by a Sanders power amp, a solid state unit
which is optimized for driving electrostats. I heard this system last year,
and liked it very much, so I didn’t spend much time in this room. The
speakers are very transparent with lots of detail, but they have a narrow
sweet spot. Roger Sanders sets up his room with a single row of chairs, one
behind another, aligned on the axis between the speakers, so that no one is
listening off axis. This year Sanders introduced a smaller model, the Model
11, with a retail price of $9,995/pair.

RMAF 2009 Coverage
What if you gave a party--and FOUR THOUSAND of your closest friends came?
That's
what RMAF 2009 was like. The mood was upbeat, the sound was great, and
over 150 rooms held an unimaginable variety of wonderful toys. Unlike
the air of anxiety often felt at CES, both staff and attendees seemed
excited and glad to be there. And why not? What better way to spit in
the eye of doomsayers? This place ROCKED, and there was no shortage of
new-tech products to introduce the high end to the next generation.
Following
the death of organizer Al Stiefel earlier this year, there was some
uncertainty regarding the future of the show. Thanks to Al's wife
Marjorie Baumert the show went on, bigger than ever, and will continue
in years to come. Here's proof that an act of love beats corporate
money-grubbing, every time. Many thanks to Marjorie and her staff for a
great show, and a fitting memorial to a good man.
